Punjab Kings will be desperate to address glaring issues in their bowling and fielding departments when they take on an already eliminated Mumbai Indians on Thursday in a crucial IPL clash.
After dominating the first half of the tournament, Punjab Kings have suddenly hit a rough patch, suffering four consecutive defeats to slip into a tense battle for a playoff berth. They now need victories in at least two of their remaining matches to stay firmly in contention for a top-four finish.
Not long ago, Punjab Kings were the only unbeaten side in the competition, but the unpredictable nature of the IPL has once again shown how quickly momentum can shift.
Captain Shreyas Iyer admitted after the loss to Delhi Capitals that the team had only itself to blame for its current predicament. Punjab’s strong batting performances had initially covered up weaknesses in the bowling attack, but even posting what Iyer considered an above-par total against Delhi Capitals proved insufficient.

Despite being in control on a pitch offering assistance to seamers, the Punjab pacers failed to execute their plans effectively in the final overs. The pace unit, spearheaded by Arshdeep Singh, currently has the poorest economy rate among all 10 IPL teams.
Arshdeep and Xavier Bartlett had formed a reliable new-ball partnership earlier in the season, but the combination has been altered following the inclusion of Lockie Ferguson, who is primarily valued for his middle and death-over expertise.
Punjab opted to field three left-arm pacers in the previous game by bringing in Ben Dwarshuis, though the move backfired as he leaked runs heavily. Lead fast bowler Arshdeep has conceded at more than 10 runs per over in most of the 11 matches he has played this season.
Interestingly, spin was not used at all in Monday’s game, leaving questions over whether veteran leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal will feature prominently in the upcoming contest.
On the batting side, Prabhsimran Singh will be eager to rediscover form and provide support to the impressive Priyansh Arya at the top of the order. Punjab will also expect a far better display in catching and ground fielding. Their opponents Mumbai Indians may already be out of playoff contention, but they still possess enough firepower to derail Punjab’s campaign. It remains uncertain whether skipper Hardik Pandya, sidelined for the last two matches with a niggle, will return to action on Wednesday night.
Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav, who has endured a lean run both internationally and in franchise cricket over the past year, will look to make the most of Mumbai’s final three games.
Openers Ryan Rickelton and Rohit Sharma will also aim to provide an explosive start during the powerplay. Experienced pacers Trent Boult — though not guaranteed a place in the XI — and Jasprit Bumrah will hope to exploit the seam-friendly conditions with the new ball.
The match is scheduled to begin at 7:30 pm.
