Carlos Alcaraz reclaims World No 1 with US Open win.

Carlos Alcaraz produced one of his most clinical Grand Slam performances on Sunday, brushing aside Jannik Sinner in four sets to win his second US Open crown and reclaim the World No. 1 ranking.

The Spaniard, 22, dominated the final at Arthur Ashe Stadium with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory, sealing the title with an ace and reviving the golf-swing celebration that has become his trademark. The six-time Grand Slam champion displayed near-flawless serving throughout the fortnight, including in the final, to end Sinner’s 27-match unbeaten run on hard-court majors.

It marked Alcaraz’s second triumph in New York and his sixth Grand Slam overall, making him one of the youngest players to win multiple titles across three surfaces. Only the Australian Open remains missing from his collection.

The win also dethroned Sinner from the No. 1 spot, denying the Italian a chance to become the first man since Roger Federer in 2008 to successfully defend the US Open title.

Unlike their previous two Grand Slam finals this year — a marathon five-hour clash in Paris and a tense contest at Wimbledon — the New York showdown proved one-sided. Alcaraz overpowered his rival in two hours and 42 minutes, his brutal shot-making leaving Sinner with few answers.

Save for a slip in the second set, Alcaraz was relentless. He won 83% of points on his first serve, fired 10 aces, and committed no double faults. In contrast, Sinner landed just 48% of first serves and struggled to hold, finishing with a slew of unforced errors.

Alcaraz set the tone by breaking Sinner in the opening game of the match, which lasted eight minutes, and pressed home the advantage to seal the first set. The highlight came in the fifth game when he produced a breathtaking volley, slicing across court for a winner that even left him momentarily astonished.

Sinner rallied in the second set, finding his rhythm with thundering forehands and improved serving. A decisive break to love allowed him to level the contest. But the resurgence proved short-lived. Alcaraz responded ruthlessly, racing to a 3-0 lead in the third set before clinching it 6-1.

The fourth set saw Sinner again falter on serve, while Alcaraz’s speed and agility kept him in complete control. The Italian saved two match points but could not deny the inevitable, as Alcaraz converted the third to cap a dazzling display.

The closed roof and cool New York conditions suited the Spaniard, who revelled in his role as showman before a packed crowd that even included US President Donald Trump. Blending power, artistry and athleticism, Alcaraz reminded the world why he is widely considered the heir to tennis’s biggest stage.

“This is the level I want to show,” Alcaraz said afterwards. “I worked hard to be back at No. 1, and winning here again makes it even more special.”
