The IND vs AUS 4th Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) saw tensions rise as Virat Kohli nearly confronted fans on Day 2. Kohli was walking back to the pavilion after being dismissed by Scott Boland when he faced boos from sections of the crowd.
The jeering appeared to anger the Indian batter, who turned around in the MCG tunnel to confront the fans. Before the situation escalated, a security officer at the MCG intervened and escorted Kohli through the tunnel, calming him down.
Kohli vs Konstas sparks drama at MCG
The incident was part of ongoing tension at the MCG, where Virat Kohli has faced booing from Day 1 of the Boxing Day Test. The hostility began after an on-field altercation between Kohli and 19-year-old debutant Sam Konstas.
In the first hour of play on Day 1, Kohli and Konstas had a heated exchange following Konstas' aggressive batting against Jasprit Bumrah. During a tense moment between overs, Kohli and Konstas bumped shoulders while crossing paths on the pitch. Neither player yielded, and the confrontation escalated into a verbal exchange.
Usman Khawaja stepped in to diffuse the tension, wrapping an arm around Kohli to ease the situation. Match officials also intervened to restore order. Commentator Ricky Ponting remarked, "Virat walked an entire pitch over to his right to instigate that confrontation. There’s no doubt about it."
Kohli's frustrating end to Day 2
Kohli batted well alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal in the final session, contributing to a 100-run partnership. However, a mix-up between the two resulted in Jaiswal being run out. Just seven balls later, Kohli edged a delivery from Scott Boland to the wicketkeeper and was dismissed.
As he left the field, Kohli faced another confrontation with the crowd, adding to the dramatic events of the IND vs AUS 4th Test at the MCG.
