Assam teen lifts gold at World Youth Championships

Last year, Bharali secured a bronze medal in the 67kg category.


Assam's teenage weightlifter Bedabrat Bharali clinched the gold medal in the men's 73kg category at the IWF World Youth Championships in Lima, Peru.

 

The 17-year-old triumphed with a total lift of 296kg, comprising 136kg in the snatch and 160kg in the clean and jerk, finishing 12kg ahead of his nearest competitor.

 

Last year, Bharali, an Asian youth champion, secured a third-place finish in the 67kg category.

 

His victory in Lima marks a significant achievement in his burgeoning career.

 

The silver medal went to Ryan McDonald of the United States, who lifted 284kg (125kg in snatch and 159kg in clean and jerk).

 

Ukraine's Serhii Kotelevskyi claimed the bronze with a total of 283kg (130kg in snatch and 153kg in clean and jerk).

 

Adding to India's medal tally, Sairaj Pardeshi earned a bronze in the snatch discipline of the men's 81kg category with a lift of 135kg.

 

However, Pardeshi narrowly missed an overall medal, finishing fourth with a total lift of 300kg (135kg+165kg).
