Suryakumar Yadav has been appointed as the new captain of the Indian T20I team, replacing Rohit Sharma for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made the announcement regarding India's squad on Tuesday, 18 July.
In a surprising move, the BCCI chose Suryakumar Yadav over Hardik Pandya, who served as Rohit Sharma's deputy during the ICC tournament. Despite leading the Indian T20I side throughout the 2023 season, Hardik was overlooked for the captaincy role.
Suryakumar Yadav, who has captained the team in just 7 matches, emerged as the preferred choice due to his impressive track record. Under his leadership, India won 5 out of 7 T20Is, with Suryakumar himself contributing significantly with 300 runs. Known for his dynamic batting style, he scored two fifties and one century during his tenure as captain.
India's T20I squad for the Sri Lanka tour includes Suryakumar Yadav as captain, with Shubman Gill appointed as the vice-captain. The squad also features Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rinku Singh, Riyan Parag, Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson as wicketkeepers, along with Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, Khaleel Ahmed, and Mohd. Siraj.
The upcoming series against Sri Lanka comprises three T20Is scheduled from July 27th to July 30th in Pallekele, followed by three ODIs in Colombo starting from August 02.
This decision marks a significant change in the leadership of the Indian T20I team, with Suryakumar Yadav set to lead the team in his new role as captain.
