Legendary former India cricket captain Kapil Dev has thrown his weight behind the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) decision to terminate central contracts for players who have shown a lack of commitment to domestic cricket.

This move, according to Kapil, is essential to safeguarding the integrity of marquee first-class tournaments like the Ranji Trophy. Expressing his support, Kapil acknowledged that while a few players may suffer as a consequence, it is a necessary step for the greater good of Indian cricket.

"Yes, few players will suffer, but let it be. Nobody is bigger than the country," he remarked, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing national duty over individual interests.

In his statement, Kapil commended the BCCI for taking a stand to uphold the significance of domestic cricket, expressing disappointment at the trend of established international players neglecting their domestic responsibilities.

He stressed the importance of established stars participating in domestic competitions, citing it as a means of supporting and giving back to the state associations that nurtured them.

Moreover, Kapil expressed gratitude towards the BCCI for its decision to enhance the pension of former cricketers, considering it a significant relief for the families of many retired players.

The increase in pension amounts, announced by the board in 2022, signifies a recognition of the contributions made by these players to Indian cricket. The decision to terminate central contracts for players like Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer, who ignored the BCCI's directive to participate in the Ranji Trophy, has sparked a debate within the cricketing community.

While some have supported the players, Kapil's endorsement of the BCCI's stance adds weight to the argument for prioritizing domestic cricket. In conclusion, Kapil Dev's endorsement of the BCCI's decision underscores the importance of honoring domestic commitments in the cricketing journey of Indian players.

As the country's cricketing landscape evolves, maintaining the integrity and significance of domestic tournaments remains paramount for the growth and success of Indian cricket on the global stage.
