Bumrah’s fifer limits England to 387; India off to cautious start

India’s frontline pacer has broken Kapil Dev's record of 12 five-wicket hauls on foreign soil

Jasprit Bumrah being congratulated by teammates after he dismissed Joe Root on the second day of the third Test match between India and England at Lord's on Friday.

Living up to his billing, India’s frontline pacer Jasprit Bumrah produced a lethal spell in the morning and took a five-wicket haul as India bowled out England for 387 on the second day of the third Test at Lord’s on Friday. England reached the competitive total on the back of Joe Root's 37th century.

After Bumrah (5 for 74) overtook Kapil Dev's record of 12 five-wicket hauls on foreign soil, India were off to a cautious start, reaching 44 for 1 at tea break. Bumrah now has 15 five-wicket hauls in Test cricket and he has achieved the milestone in back-to-back Tests, including the one at Leeds.

Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal (13) fell to Jofra Archer in the England pacer’s comeback Test, while KL Rahul (13 batting) and Karun Nair (18 batting) survived the session. But Nair did not appear to be comfortable against Archer and Brydon Carse.

The morning session belonged to Bumrah, who was rested in the Edgbaston Test as part of his workload management programme. While Root (104 off 199 balls) got the boundary off the very first delivery to score his record eighth hundred at Lord’s, Bumrah soon struck with three wickets in quick succession to reduce England to 271 for 7 at one point.

Skipper Ben Stokes (44), Root and Chris Woakes (0) departed before in-form Jamie Smith (51 off 56 balls) and Carse (56 off 83 balls) made 84 for the eighth wicket stand to take England past 350 runs. Smith got a lifeline when Rahul dropped his catch off Mohammed Siraj. Stokes was the first batsman to go on the day. One ball after he square cut Bumrah for a four, Stokes got a stunner from the Indian pacer which seamed back in from round the wicket to hit the top of off-stump. Stokes could do nothing but shake his head in disbelief.

Root got out soon after scoring his hundred off the first delivery of the day. Bumrah forced Root forward and the ball came back to take the inside edge before hitting the middle-stump. It was the 11th time that Bumrah got the wicket of Root in Tests. Woakes was caught behind on the very next ball.

Surprisingly, captain Shubman Gill wanted a ball change although the second new Dukes ball was only around 10 overs old. The umpires accepted his request but the Indians were not happy with the replacement ball, which led to an animated conversation between Gill and the umpires as England reached 307 for seven in the opening hour. Soon after, the ball was changed for the second time in the session, adding to the debate over the balls used in England.
