Tributes poured in from around the world following the death of West Indies great Sir Garry Sobers. West Indies legend Brian Lara said Sobers’ achievements will live long in the annals of cricket. The current West Indies team observed a minute’s silence in the memory of Sir Sobers, paying tribute to his legacy and offering condolences to his friends and family.
Legendary Indian all-rounder Kapil Dev described Sobers as one of the greatest all-rounders the game has ever seen and recalled a memorable golfing experience that reflected Sobers’ extraordinary talent. Kapil said Sobers inspired generations of cricketers and remained one of the sport’s biggest legends.
“One of the finest cricketers, for people like us, an all-rounder who wants to bat, bowl and field, I think nobody can come close to him. What a fine cricketer. Not in our era, one era before he played, and till today we talk about him. I think he taught us one thing: how to get runs. And he looked so passionate. Whatever footage I have seen, he used to enjoy sport,” said Kapil.
India great Sachin Tendulkar labelled Sobers as the “one and only” and recollected some core memories with the West Indies icon over the years.
“It is incredibly tough to process that Sir Garry is gone. I have been looking back at the memories we shared over the years, from him handing me the Player of the Tournament trophy at the 2003 World Cup to his warm words when he felicitated me on the century milestone,” Tendulkar tweeted.
Former India captain Virat Kohli described Sobers as one of the greatest figures the sport has ever produced. He took to X to express his condolences and hailed Sobers’ lasting influence on cricket. “Cricket has lost one of its greatest. Rest in peace, Sir Garfield Sobers. Your legacy will inspire generations,” he wrote.
West Indies great and a voice of the game, Ian Bishop, praised the legacy that Sir Sobers leaves behind. Sri Lanka’s Angelo Matthews called Sir Sobers as not just one of the game's greatest, but someone who set the benchmark for greatness in the game.
Former India opener Virender Sehwag described the icon as being far ahead of his time. India legend Harbhajan Singh labelled it as a big loss for the world of cricket. India legend Yuvraj Singh said Sir Sobers will remain an inspiration for generations to come.
