The BCCI’s new uncapped player rule for the 2025 Indian Premier League is going to benefit many players in the franchises.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) may stand to benefit significantly, with the possibility of retaining their iconic former captain, MS Dhoni, under the uncapped category.
BCCI brought back the 'uncapped player' rule for the 2025 IPL auction, a regulation last used before 2021.
The rule applies to Indian players who have not played international cricket in the last five years or do not have a central contract, allowing them to be bought at a base price of INR 4 lakh.
The rule allows teams to retain up to six players, with the highest-paid receiving ₹18 crore, followed by ₹16 crore and ₹11 crore, within a total salary cap increased to ₹120 crore.
Dhoni, who retired from international cricket in 2019, could be retained without putting heavy pressure on CSK’s salary cap.
While Dhoni has drawn most of the attention, other experienced players are also likely to benefit.
Mumbai Indians could retain veteran spinner Piyush Chawla, who last played for India in 2012 and remains a valuable player. Chawla was the second-highest wicket-taker for Mumbai in the 2024 season, despite the team’s struggles.
Gujarat Titans are expected to retain pacer Mohit Sharma, who played for India last in 2015. His consistent performance in recent IPL seasons makes him a key figure for the franchise.
Similarly, Rajasthan Royals could take advantage of the rule to keep swing bowler Sandeep Sharma, whose last international appearance for India was in 2015. Sharma’s abilities as a reliable swing bowler make him a valuable asset under this rule.
