Indian spinner Deepti Sharma is on the verge of being ranked as the Number 1 bowler in the ICC women’s T20 International rankings for the first time in her career after moving within eight rating points of the top position by rising to the second spot in the latest rankings.
Twenty-seven-year-old Deepti has largely been among the top 10 ranked T20I bowlers for the last six years, but she has never held the top position despite the fact that she has been exceptionally consistent in recent times. The latest update to the T20I rankings has seen Deepti go up one spot and overtake Australia pacer Annabel Sutherland to regain the second place. Deepti is now just eight rating points behind Pakistan’s Sadia Iqbal at the top of the rankings.
Her latest rise has come on the back of a three-wicket haul in the third game of India's five-match T20I series against England. The off-spinner is likely to claim the top position from her Pakistan rival with some strong performances in the final two contests of the series against England.
Teammate and pacer Arundhati Reddy has also climbed up the rankings, gaining 11 places to jump to joint 43rd on the list for T20I bowlers following her three-wicket haul in the latest match of the series against England at The Oval.
A host of England bowlers too went up in the rankings after their narrow five-run win at the Lord’s with pacers Issy Wong (up three spots to equal 57th) and Lauren Filer (up 21 rungs to equal 68th) the two biggest risers as fellow pacer Lauren Bell maintained her fourth spot in the rankings. Among the batters, Jemimah Rodrigues gained two places to move to 12th overall after she scored a half-century in the second match of the series in Bristol.
