The Pro Kabaddi League Season 11 is reaching a crucial juncture, with teams battling fiercely for playoff spots. Amid the heightened competition, PKL legend and former winner Anup Kumar has emphasised that strong defensive strategies will determine this season’s champions.
This marks a shift in the league’s dynamic, where raiders traditionally dominated the game.
Anup Kumar, who led U Mumba to their only PKL title in Season 2, pointed out how the sport has evolved. In its earlier days, the focus was heavily on raiders, and defenders often remained overshadowed.
However, in recent seasons, defence has gained prominence, and Kumar believes that a single raider can no longer carry a team to the title. Successful teams now rely on cohesive defensive performances to complement their raiding units.
Kumar is particularly impressed with the Haryana Steelers this season. He praised their balanced approach, highlighting their standout defenders, including Mohammadreza Shadloui and Rahul Sethpal.
Their ability to deliver in high-pressure situations has made the Steelers a formidable contender for the title.
Turning his attention to his former team, U Mumba, Kumar noted their resurgence after a slow start to the season. Their chances of securing a playoff spot now rest on their performance in their final league match.
Kumar acknowledged the exceptional efforts of raider Ajit Chauhan, who has been the driving force behind U Mumba’s campaign. However, he also pointed out the lack of support for Chauhan, suggesting that with better backing from other raiders, the team could have been in a much stronger position.
Kumar’s analysis highlights a significant tactical evolution in kabaddi. He believes that success in the playoffs and beyond will depend heavily on how teams execute their defensive strategies.
While star raiders continue to play a crucial role, a balanced team effort, particularly in defence, is now seen as the key to winning the championship.
