The Delhi Dribblers delivered an impressive performance to outclass the Chennai Heat 90-80 in the InBL Pro U25 match at the Thyagraj Indoor Stadium.
Despite missing their top scorer, Lachlan Barker, due to illness, the Dribblers controlled the game for three quarters, with Alexander Mudronja and Daniel Poelsma leading the charge.
Mudronja scored 22 points, while Poelsma added 21 to ensure their team emerged victorious. James Montgomery also made a significant impact, contributing 21 points and securing a 13-rebound double-double.
The game started with the Dribblers focusing on their defensive strategy, limiting the Heat to just two points in the opening five minutes. Keith Kiner managed to break through with a three-pointer, attempting to ignite the Heat’s offence.
However, Poelsma responded strongly for the Dribblers, sinking three consecutive three-pointers. Arvind Kumar then led Chennai’s comeback, making two successive three-pointers to reduce the deficit to just three points by the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Heat intensified their pressure with a full-court press, but Montgomery turned the momentum in the Dribblers' favour. He stole the ball and delivered a powerful dunk, boosting his team's confidence.
The Dribblers’ aggressive defensive play forced several turnovers, allowing them to score efficiently on fast breaks. Meanwhile, Chennai struggled to break through the opposition's tight defence and found themselves trailing by 10 points at halftime.
The third quarter saw a remarkable resurgence from the Chennai Heat. Arvinder Singh and Arvind Kumar showcased their offensive skills, scoring consistently and tightening their defensive efforts.
The turning point came when Keith Kiner made a dynamic drive down the baseline and executed a powerful dunk, giving Chennai their first lead of the game.
The intensity escalated as both teams traded baskets, and by the end of the quarter, the Dribblers managed to regain a slim three-point advantage.
In the final quarter, Montgomery proved to be the game-changer for the Dribblers, dominating inside the paint and helping his team extend the lead to 15 points.
The Dribblers continued their offensive onslaught, while the Heat struggled to keep pace defensively. Despite a late attempt by Chennai to close the gap, with Arvind Kumar sinking a few three-pointers, the Dribblers remained composed and held on to seal a hard-fought 90-80 victory.
