Former Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni provided a moment of amusement during the opening match of IPL 2024 between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).
Dhoni, having relinquished the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad before the season, instinctively went to initiate a Decision Review System (DRS) call, only to remember his new role and playfully gesture towards Gaikwad, the rightful decision-maker.
This lighthearted exchange spotlights the changing of the guard at CSK. Dhoni, who led the team to their fifth IPL title last year, has passed the baton to the promising young opener Gaikwad.
While his batting services weren't required in the match, Dhoni's experience proved valuable behind the stumps. He snagged two catches and played a crucial role in the under-arm run-out of Anuj Rawat on the final ball of the RCB's innings.
Dhoni's quest for a record-breaking sixth IPL title continues. Under his remarkable leadership, CSK has become the joint-most successful franchise in the league's history, lifting the trophy on five occasions.
The 42-year-old has also carved an impressive individual IPL career, amassing over 5,000 runs with a formidable strike rate. His wicketkeeping prowess remains unmatched, with a tally exceeding 180 dismissals.
RCB, courtesy of a vital partnership between Dinesh Karthik and Anuj Rawat, managed to put up a total of 173 on the board. Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman shone with a four-wicket haul.
In reply, CSK's chase was spearheaded by debutant Rachin Ravindra's belligerent knock of 37 off just 15 deliveries. Shivam Dube, introduced as an Impact Substitute, played a crucial cameo with a 28-ball 34, guiding his team to a comfortable six-wicket victory with eight balls to spare.
CSK will now set their sights on their next challenge, a home encounter against Gujarat Titans on Tuesday, March 26th.
