Defending champions NorthEast United FC kicked off their campaign in the 135th Durand Cup with an emphatic 6-0 victory over Bodoland FC in the opening Group F fixture at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium on Saturday. Led by a sensational hat-trick from returning star Alaaeddine Ajaraie, the Highlanders produced a commanding display to begin their title defence in style.
Ajaraie was the standout performer of the evening, scoring three goals and later providing an assist, while Lalrinzuala Lalbiaknia, Redeem Tlang, and substitute Antonio Moyano also found the back of the net in a one-sided contest.
NorthEast United head coach Juan Pedro Benali fielded his side in a 4-4-2 formation, pairing Ajaraie with Lalrinzuala in attack. Bodoland FC, coached by Vikash Panthi, lined up in a 4-2-3-1 system with Robinson Blandon Rendon leading the frontline.
The defending champions wasted little time asserting their dominance, controlling possession from the opening whistle and dictating the tempo of the game. Ajaraie looked dangerous throughout the first half, creating the first meaningful chance with a teasing cross from the left that Macarton Louis Nickson controlled before firing straight at goalkeeper Birkhang Daimary.
NorthEast came close to breaking the deadlock in the eighth minute after Jithin M.S. made an impressive run down the left flank and cut the ball back for Lalrinzuala. His clever flick found Mohammed Arshaf in space, but the midfielder failed to keep his effort down, sending the ball over the crossbar from a promising position.
The Highlanders continued to dominate proceedings, with Jithin and Lalrinzuala combining effectively to stretch the Bodoland defence. Despite the pressure, defenders Gaurav Bohara, Urjoy Brahma, and Didwm Hazowary worked tirelessly to deny NorthEast an early breakthrough.
Bodoland had a few encouraging moments of their own. Midfielder Rituraj Mohan produced a perfectly timed sliding challenge to dispossess Ajaraie inside the penalty area, while winger Wanshwadame Diengdoh's attempt took a slight deflection before rolling harmlessly wide.
NorthEast kept pushing forward with their aggressive pressing and sustained possession. Ajaraie twice threatened from free-kicks, forcing goalkeeper Daimary into a pair of important saves. The Bodoland shot-stopper first spilled a powerful effort before recovering quickly ahead of Lalrinzuala and later punched another dangerous free-kick away from the top corner.
After dominating much of the opening period, NorthEast finally found the breakthrough in first-half stoppage time. Capitalising on a turnover deep inside Bodoland's half, Ajaraie demonstrated superb composure by cushioning the ball inside the box before calmly guiding a left-footed finish beyond the advancing goalkeeper to hand his side a deserved lead.
The Highlanders entered the interval firmly in control, enjoying 58 per cent possession and registering nine attempts on goal, five of them on target, while Bodoland managed only two shots without troubling goalkeeper Gurmeet Singh.
Bodoland showed greater attacking intent after the restart, earning an early corner and attempting to press higher up the pitch. Substitute Manabir Basumatary added energy to the midfield with several strong tackles, while Rituraj Mohan and Diengdoh tried to create openings down the right flank.
However, NorthEast quickly reasserted control and doubled their lead in the 58th minute. Mohammed Arshaf played an excellent through ball into the path of Jithin on the right wing, whose low delivery across the face of goal was converted from close range by Lalrinzuala.
Just nine minutes later, Ajaraie struck again. Macarton Louis Nickson's cross created confusion inside the Bodoland penalty area, and after a defensive mix-up left the ball loose, the Moroccan forward reacted quickest to delicately chip his finish over Daimary and make it 3-0.
The defending champions continued to attack relentlessly. Substitute Parthib Gogoi nearly added another with a near-post header before NorthEast's fourth goal arrived in the 70th minute. Once again, Macarton turned provider, threading a perfectly weighted pass between the central defenders for Redeem Tlang, who calmly slotted the ball past the goalkeeper.
Despite the mounting scoreline, Bodoland continued to battle, with experienced defender Shubham Sarangi making several crucial interceptions and tackles to prevent further damage.

Ajaraie completed a memorable hat-trick in the 86th minute with another moment of quality. Racing onto a defence-splitting pass, he skipped past two defenders with quick footwork before placing a composed right-footed finish into the far corner.
There was still time for one final goal in stoppage time. Ajaraie turned creator, lofting a precise pass to Parthib Gogoi on the left. Gogoi unselfishly squared the ball across the six-yard box, allowing substitute Antonio Moyano to tap into an empty net and complete NorthEast United's resounding 6-0 victory.
The convincing win gives the defending champions the perfect start to their Group F campaign and underlines their credentials as strong contenders to retain the Durand Cup title. With attacking fluidity, defensive solidity, and Ajaraie's clinical finishing on full display, NorthEast United sent an early warning to the rest of the competition.
