Still in contention for a playoff spot despite an inconsistent campaign, Chennai Super Kings will aim to maintain their late resurgence when they face the already-eliminated Lucknow Super Giants in an IPL clash on Friday.
While Chennai have managed to stay in the race with crucial wins during the latter half of the tournament, Lucknow’s campaign has steadily fallen apart due to a series of underwhelming performances.
For CSK, the qualification scenario remains simple—they must win their remaining fixtures and rely on favourable outcomes in other matches. The five-time champions are currently placed fifth on the points table with six victories from 11 games.
Although the side has often been criticised for lacking explosive finishing power, Chennai have shown resilience through important contributions from Sanju Samson, Urvil Patel, skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad and several promising youngsters.

Urvil’s aggressive batting at the top has injected much-needed momentum into CSK’s powerplay scoring. In Friday’s contest, players such as Shivam Dube, Kartik Sharma and Dewald Brevis are expected to play vital roles in the middle overs on what is likely to be a batting-friendly pitch.
However, Chennai’s bowling attack has suffered a major setback with all-rounder Jamie Overton ruled out of the remainder of the IPL because of a thigh injury. The England player has returned to the UK for further assessment.
The injury comes as a significant blow to CSK’s playoff hopes, adding to the team’s growing list of fitness concerns this season. Before his injury, Overton had been one of Chennai’s standout bowlers, delivering crucial breakthroughs in the middle overs. He picked up 14 wickets in 10 matches and emerged as one of the side’s most effective performers with the ball.
Despite injuries to several key players, CSK’s disciplined and varied bowling attack, featuring Akeal Hosein, has helped the team register important victories.
Pacers Mukesh Choudhary and Anshul Kamboj have largely fulfilled their responsibilities, while Afghanistan spinner Noor Ahmad has also delivered consistently impressive performances.
Lucknow, meanwhile, have little more than pride to play for after failing to gather momentum at any stage of the season.
