The World Tennis League (WTL) is gearing up for an exciting third season, set to begin on Thursday in Abu Dhabi. This year, the tournament has introduced a fresh format, aiming to add more thrill and unpredictability to the competition.
The revamped structure sees four teams battling it out in a round-robin style, with the top two teams advancing to the final scheduled for December 22nd.
The WTL is a unique event in the tennis calendar, bringing together some of the biggest stars in the sport. In this season, each team will face off against the others once, with the aim of securing the most number of games to qualify for the final.
The round-robin format ensures that every team has an equal opportunity to showcase their talents, making it a truly competitive spectacle.
In terms of structure, each match will consist of four sets: one men’s singles, one women’s singles, and two doubles sets. The doubles sets could feature men’s doubles, women’s doubles, or even mixed doubles, adding an extra layer of strategy to the tournament.
The team that wins the coin toss will have the advantage of choosing the format of the doubles match, which can influence the overall result.
What makes this season even more intriguing is the introduction of overtime and Super Shootout rules, designed to spice up closely contested matches. If the trailing team wins the fourth set, the match will move into overtime (OT).
In OT, the game continues until one team either extends their lead or the trailing team catches up to the overall game total. If scores remain tied after OT, the match will be decided by a Super Shootout, which is an intense, high-stakes decider.
During the Super Shootout, the players who competed in the fourth set will return to the court to battle it out in a race to 10 points, with sudden death at 9-9.
The first team to reach 10 points will earn an additional game and two bonus points, providing them with a significant advantage heading into the next stage of the tournament.
The season opener promises to be an electrifying affair, with the Game Changers Falcons, featuring stars like Elena Rybakina and Andrey Rublev, going up against the TSL Hawks, led by Women’s World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and India’s Sumit Nagal.
With such an impressive line-up, fans are in for a treat as they witness world-class tennis and innovative formats in one thrilling competition.
The WTL's new rules aim to keep the matches exciting and unpredictable, giving both players and fans the chance to experience something fresh. The overtime and Super Shootout rules will ensure that every match is filled with tension and drama, and the introduction of more doubles play allows for greater variety and teamwork.
This season promises to be one of the most exciting yet, and the players will be doing everything they can to secure a spot in the final and ultimately lift the trophy.
