Indian Grandmaster R Vaishali delivered a decisive blow to her Women’s Candidates 2026 campaign on Friday, defeating Aleksandra Goryachkina with the black pieces in Round 11 to extend her lead at the top of the standings and move within touching distance of a potential title shot.

The Indian capitalised on a critical mid-game error from Goryachkina, who miscalculated a sequence that left a rook trapped. The former world championship challenger was unable to recover from the material loss and eventually resigned, handing Vaishali a full point.

With the win, Vaishali moved to seven points from 11 games, strengthening her position at the top of the table. Zhu Jiner and Anna Muzychuk remain joint second on six points, a full point adrift with only three rounds remaining in the double round-robin event.

India’s Divya Deshmukh also held her nerve to secure a draw against Zhu Jiner with the black pieces, keeping herself in contention in a tightly packed midfield. Kateryna Lagno and Muzychuk also shared the spoils in their respective games, while Tan Zhongyi drew with Bibisara Assaubayeva.

In the Open section, R Praggnanandhaa played out a solid draw against Matthias Blübaum with white, taking his tally to 4.5 points after 11 rounds. The Indian prodigy remains in the middle of the standings but outside the race for the top spots.

At the top, Javokhir Sindarov maintained his commanding position after drawing with Fabiano Caruana, taking his total to 8.5 points. Anish Giri remains the closest challenger on 6.5 after drawing with Andrey Esipenko, while Hikaru Nakamura and Wei Yi also split points in their respective encounters.

With only a few rounds remaining, Sindarov has moved to the brink of a Candidates triumph, while Vaishali’s surge has set up a compelling finish in the women’s section.
