The result leaves both Cape Verde and Uruguay on two points in Group H, with Cape Verde still in contention for a place in the knockout rounds.

Cape Verde's dream debut at the FIFA World Cup continued on Sunday as the tiny island nation fought back to earn a remarkable 2-2 draw against two-time champions Uruguay.

After stunning tournament favourites Spain with a goalless draw in their opening match, Cape Verde once again exceeded expectations. Kevin Pina scored the country's first-ever World Cup goal with a brilliant free kick in the 21st minute, giving his side an early lead.

Uruguay responded before halftime through Maxi Araújo and Agustin Canobbio to take a 2-1 advantage. However, substitute Helio Varela capitalised on a defensive error in the second half, scoring his first international goal to level the contest and secure a valuable point.

The result leaves both Cape Verde and Uruguay on two points in Group H, with Cape Verde still in contention for a place in the knockout rounds. They face Saudi Arabia in their final group game, while Uruguay must get a positive result against Spain to keep their qualification hopes alive.

Cape Verde coach Pedro Leitao Brito praised his players' resilience, saying the team wanted to prove that smaller nations can compete with football's traditional powers despite limited resources. Veteran goalkeeper Vozinha, one of the stars of Cape Verde's campaign, once again impressed, while defender Stopira said the team's performances had shown the world their quality and belief.

For Uruguay, coach Marcelo Bielsa admitted his side paid a heavy price for defensive mistakes after settling for a second consecutive draw at the tournament.
