Sven-Goran Eriksson, the first non-British manager of England football team, has died at 76.

Eriksson, the first foreign manager of the England men's football team in 2001, coached the "golden generation" of players including David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, Wayne Rooney, and Frank Lampard.

He saw his team qualify for the quarter-finals of three major tournaments between 2001 and 2006.

Eriksson had been diagnosed with cancer.

"Our father Sven-Goran Eriksson fell asleep peacefully in his home at Bjorkefors outside Sunne this morning. He has for a long time fought bravely with his illness, but now it came to an end,” his children, Lina and Johan, said on Monday.

The Swede, who managed around 12 clubs, including Manchester City, Leicester, Roma and Lazio, with a success run including 18 trophies, had said earlier in 2000 that he had a year "at best" to live after his cancer diagnosis.

His children said their father had told them about his illness, “and received an amazing response from friends and football fans around Europe.

"He was invited to several football teams in England, Italy, Portugal and Sweden. They shared their love for football and for dad.

"It was unforgettable for both him and us. He expressed his appreciation and joy and stated that such beautiful words are usually only uttered when someone has died.

"We hope that you will remember Svennis as the good and positive person he always was both in public and at home with us."

After his diagnosis Eriksson visited some of his clubs such as Lazio and Sampdoria.

Eriksson retired as a player at 27 and started working as a manger with Degerfors in 1977. He attracted attention when he led Swedish club IFK Gothenburg to the UEFA Cup title in 1982.

He had two stints with the Portuguese Benfica and managed Italian sides Roma, Fiorentina, Sampdoria and Lazio - where he won, among seven trophies, the Serie A title, two Italian Cups and the European Cup Winners' Cup.

In a recent documentary on his life, Eriksson said: "I hope you will remember me as a positive guy trying to do everything he could do. Don't be sorry, smile. Thank you for everything, coaches, players, the crowds, it's been fantastic. Take care of yourself and take care of your life. And live it."
