Gujarat Titans will look to strengthen their chances of securing a top-two finish when they take on a struggling Chennai Super Kings in their IPL clash in Ahmedabad on Thursday.

A top-two finish in the league standings offers teams two chances to qualify for the final through Qualifier 1, making the contest crucial for Gujarat as the tournament enters its final league phase.

Currently sitting second on the points table with 16 points, Gujarat Titans are locked in a tight race with table leaders Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who have 18 points, and Sunrisers Hyderabad, who also have 16 points. A win over Chennai would significantly boost GT’s hopes of retaining a top-two position heading into the playoffs.

A convincing victory could even help Gujarat overtake RCB’s superior net run rate of +1.065, depending on the outcome of other matches. If Sunrisers Hyderabad also manage to beat RCB in their final league fixture, the race for the second spot could eventually be decided by net run rate. In that situation, Gujarat currently enjoy a slight advantage with a net run rate of +0.400 compared to Hyderabad’s +0.350.

For Chennai Super Kings, however, the equation is far more complicated. Their playoff hopes have suffered a major setback following a narrow defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad, leaving the five-time champions on the brink of elimination.

Led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, CSK now need not only a victory in this contest but also favourable outcomes in other matches to remain in contention for the final playoff berth. With their campaign faltering, the team will primarily aim to restore pride in what could potentially be their final appearance of the season.

The match at the batting-friendly Narendra Modi Stadium is expected to provide ideal conditions for stroke-makers, and Gujarat’s opening pair of Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan will once again be central to the home side’s plans. Both batters have enjoyed excellent form this season and will be tasked with handling the new-ball movement while maximising the powerplay against Chennai’s bowling attack.

The middle overs could produce an intriguing tactical contest, particularly with Gujarat’s ace spinner Rashid Khan set to challenge Chennai’s experienced batting unit.

Alongside Gill and Sudharsan, Jos Buttler remains a key pillar of Gujarat’s batting line-up. However, the Titans’ middle order has occasionally looked vulnerable, something CSK will attempt to exploit early through left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein, who has dismissed Gill twice previously in T20 cricket.

For Chennai, Sanju Samson could prove crucial in handling Gujarat’s spin attack during the middle overs. His ability to counter Rashid Khan’s wrist spin may determine whether CSK can post a competitive total or successfully chase a target if they bat second.

The head-to-head rivalry between the two sides remains evenly balanced at 4-4. However, Gujarat have enjoyed the upper hand in recent meetings, including an emphatic eight-wicket victory over Chennai earlier this season at Chepauk.

In that encounter, Kagiso Rabada played a decisive role by dismantling CSK’s top order with a three-wicket haul. Chennai’s hopes this time will largely depend on Gaikwad and Samson negotiating Rabada’s opening spell and shielding a middle order that has struggled under pressure.

While injuries to several important players have hurt Chennai throughout the campaign, their bowling attack has also lacked consistency and penetration. In contrast, Gujarat’s bowling unit has looked far more organised and effective for most of the tournament. The match is scheduled to begin at 7.30 pm.
