Seamer Chris Woakes ruled out of the final Test due to shoulder injury.

England seamer Chris Woakes will take no further part in the fifth and final Test of the series, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced on Friday, August 1. The news, which came ahead of the second day's play, confirmed that Woakes had been ruled out of the remainder of the series. He will undergo a full assessment at the conclusion of the Test match.

The injury occurred on Day 1 at The Oval while Woakes was fielding. In the 57th over, a drive from batsman Karun Nair off the bowling of Jamie Overton sent the ball racing down the ground. Woakes sprinted to cut it off, successfully preventing a boundary and holding Nair to three runs. However, he landed awkwardly in the process, immediately clutching his shoulder before leaving the field. Woakes did not return for the rest of the day's play.

The seriousness of the injury was hinted at by fellow seamer Gus Atkinson, who spoke to the press at the end of Day 1. Atkinson suggested that Woakes was unlikely to participate further in the match, which is a significant blow for England, especially given that the conditions at The Oval were well-suited to Woakes's style of bowling.

This injury places England in a precarious position, as Woakes is the fifth key player to be sidelined for the final Test. Captain Ben Stokes, frontline pacers Jofra Archer and Brydon Carse, and spinner Liam Dawson were all unavailable for the match due to a combination of injuries and workload management concerns. With Woakes now out, England's bowling attack is limited to Gus Atkinson, Josh Tongue, and Jamie Overton, with part-time spinners Joe Root and Jacob Bethell as the only other options.

The debate on injury replacements in test cricket

Woakes's injury reignites a recent debate about the possibility of injury replacements in Test cricket, a topic that was hotly discussed by India's head coach Gautam Gambhir and England's captain Ben Stokes at the end of the fourth Test. The two figures held opposing views on the matter.

Gambhir argued for a law allowing substitutes for "external injuries" or "serious concerns." "If there's an external injury or serious concern, I fully support having a substitute," he stated after the fourth Test in Manchester. "Especially in a series like this, if someone's visibly injured, there's nothing wrong with making a change. In a long series like this, you can't be forced to play with just ten players."

Stokes, however, was vehemently against the idea. He dismissed the suggestion as "absolutely ridiculous," arguing that it would create too many "loopholes" for teams to exploit. "You pick your 11 for a game; injuries are part of the game," Stokes said. He acknowledged the importance of concussion replacements for player safety but believed that extending the rule to other injuries would be problematic.

Stokes used an example to illustrate his point: "If you stick me in an MRI scanner, I could get someone else in straightaway... a bowler is going to show, 'Oh yeah, you've got a bit of inflammation around your knee. Oh sweet, we can get another fresh bowler in.' I just think that conversation should be shut down and stopped."
