West Indies Make Big Squad Change Ahead of 1st T20I vs India

West Indies have brought wicketkeeper-batter Amir Jangoo into their squad as cover for Jewel Andrew, who injured a finger during the third ODI against India. The move comes ahead of the opening T20I between the teams in Lucknow on Tuesday.

Andrew sustained the injury while completing a catch off Naman Dhir at the New PCA Stadium in New Chandigarh on Saturday. He was taken to hospital for an X-ray and remains under assessment by the West Indies medical team.

Cricket West Indies said Jangoo had been added to cover the wicketkeeping position following Andrew’s injury. The organisation added that Andrew was continuing to be monitored and assessed.

The incident occurred on the final delivery of the 36th over of India’s innings. Dhir chipped a tossed-up delivery from West Indies left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie towards cover, where Andrew completed the catch before taking a heavy blow to his finger. He left the field for immediate medical attention and further evaluation.

Andrew was subsequently unable to open the innings during West Indies’ chase of 352, with captain Shai Hope taking his place at the top of the order.

Jangoo, 29, has represented West Indies in seven T20Is since making his international debut in December 2024. He has scored 163 runs in the format at a strike rate of 120.74.

The wicketkeeper-batter was in strong form during the ODI series against India, recording scores of 58 not out, 114 and 67. His aggregate of 239 runs placed him third among the leading run-scorers from both teams, behind India’s Shubman Gill on 334 and Shai Hope on 278.

The first T20I of the India-West Indies series will be played in Lucknow on Tuesday.
