India achieved a historic milestone in women’s Test cricket on Saturday, surpassing Australia’s previous record of 575/9.
The new record was set during the one-off Test against South Africa when Richa Ghosh's boundary off the first ball of the 109th over propelled India beyond Australia's mark.
The achievement was fueled by stellar performances from Indian openers Shafali Verma (205) and Smriti Mandhana (149), who shared a monumental 292-run partnership, the highest ever in women's cricket for an opening stand.
Contributions from Jemimah Rodrigues (55), along with captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Richa Ghosh, who both secured unbeaten half-centuries, further bolstered India's commanding total.
Previously, on Day 1, India had ended at 525 for four, also setting a record for the highest single-day total in Test cricket, surpassing Sri Lanka's men's team's previous mark of 509/9 against Bangladesh in Colombo in 2002.
