India fall short by 22 runs

Archer, Stokes inflict most of the damage by taking three wickets each

News Arena Network - London - UPDATED: July 14, 2025, 10:05 PM - 2 min read

The middle stump of India's vice-captain Rishabh Pant uprooted off a brilliant delivery by England's Jofra Archer on the fifth day of the third Test between India and England at Lord's on Monday.

All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja’s gallant fight went in vain as England beat India by 22 runs on the fifth and final day of an exciting roller-coaster third Test with skipper Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer playing a crucial role in their team’s victory over India at Lord’s here on Monday. With this win, England have gone 2-1 up in the five-match series.

At the start of the final day’s play, India required 135 runs with six wickets in hand. India were reeling at 58 for 4 as England set a 193-run target for the visitors. England scalped four wickets before lunch, but what followed was a determined fight as Jadeja, along with Siraj and Bumrah, stretched the score to 170 for the last two wickets.

Archer and Stokes played an instrumental role in England’s victory even as Jadeja took the battle to the English players with a gritty unbeaten 61.

India lost the big wickets of Rishabh Pant (9), KL Rahul (39), Washington Sundar (0), and Nitish Reddy (13) in the first session to tilt the match in England’s favour. Frontline pacer Archer knocked off Pant’s off-stump with a delivery that straightened after landing on perfect length.

Captain Ben Stokes rose to the occasion as he trapped KL Rahul in front of the wicket, pushing the momentum back in England’s favour. The on-field umpire was not convinced by the England team’s forceful appeal for an lbw, prompting Stokes to go upstairs and the decision came in his favour.

Jofra bowled with striking consistency and pulled off a brilliant catch off his own bowling to send back Sundar and Chris Wokes, and then had Washinton Sundar edge one to the keeper. Their heroics paved the way for England’s victory.
