The Indian youth boxing team made an impressive start to its campaign at the World Boxing Futures Cup 2026 in Bangkok on Sunday, with Joyshree Devi Chirom, Ambekar Meetei Lairenlakpam and Sahil Duhan registering victories on the opening day of the tournament.
In the women’s 54kg category, Joyshree Devi Chirom delivered a dominant performance, securing a Referee Stopped Contest (RSC) victory in the second round against her opponent from Tajikistan. Her aggressive approach and strong punches forced the referee to halt the bout, giving the Indian boxer a convincing win.
In the men’s division, Ambekar Meetei Lairenlakpam (50kg) also started his campaign on a strong note. He defeated his opponent from the Philippines by a 5-0 unanimous decision, displaying excellent control and technique throughout the bout.
Sahil Duhan (60kg) further strengthened India’s performance on the opening day by registering another 5-0 unanimous decision victory, defeating his opponent from China. Sahil dominated the contest with precise punches and solid defence to secure a comfortable win.

The Indian contingent is competing in the Youth Olympic weight categories, making the tournament an important platform for young boxers to gain international exposure and prepare for upcoming global competitions, including the Youth Olympic Games.
The World Boxing Futures Cup, being held in Bangkok from March 8 to 15, has attracted several promising youth boxers from around the world. The event is considered an important developmental competition in the international boxing calendar and provides young athletes an opportunity to showcase their talent on a global stage.
Indian youth boxers had delivered a historic performance at the 3rd Asian Youth Games in Bahrain last year, where they secured seven medals, including four gold, two silver and one bronze, marking India’s best-ever showing at the continental youth boxing event.
With three victories already in the bag, the Indian team will look to maintain the momentum as the preliminary rounds continue in Bangkok over the coming days.
