India’s 435 sets new benchmark in women’s ODI cricket.

India’s women’s cricket team achieved a remarkable feat on January 15, 2025, smashing a record total of 435 runs in their third ODI against Ireland, marking their place in the history of women’s One-Day International cricket.

This total not only marked a historic achievement for India but also placed them among the elite few to have posted more than 400 runs in an innings. With this stellar performance, India joined the ranks of New Zealand and Australia, the only other teams to have achieved such a milestone.

The match, held in Rajkot, saw an outstanding display of batting prowess from Smriti Mandhana and the young Pratika Rawal, who both hit centuries. Rawal, in just her second series for India, played an exceptional knock of 154 runs off 129 balls.

This innings was the first century of her international career, and she ensured that it was no ordinary century by converting it into a ‘daddy hundred.’ Rawal’s innings featured 20 boundaries and a six, making it a memorable one for the Indian fans.

Mandhana, captaining the side in the absence of regular captain Harmanpreet Kaur, was in outstanding form. She scored a blazing 100 off just 70 balls, the fastest century by an Indian woman in women’s ODI cricket.

Mandhana continued her aggressive approach, finishing with a score of 135 off 80 balls, which included 12 boundaries and seven sixes.

Her partnership with Rawal was a standout feature of the match, as the two openers put together a massive 233-run partnership, which is now the third-highest opening stand for India in women’s ODI cricket.

Following Mandhana’s and Rawal’s remarkable contributions, Richa Ghosh played a vital role in maintaining the momentum, scoring 59 runs off 42 balls. She hit a six and 10 boundaries, showing her aggressive intent.

Tejal Hasabnis (28) and Harleen Deol (15) then helped to ensure that India finished with a total of 435 for 5 in their allotted 50 overs. The innings was further bolstered by 29 extras, as Ireland struggled to maintain discipline with the ball.

India’s total of 435 runs is now the fourth-highest total in women’s ODI history, surpassing their previous best of 370 runs, also against Ireland just days before. The overall record for the highest total in women’s ODIs is held by New Zealand, who posted 491 for 4 against Ireland in 2018.

Notably, this new total for India broke the previous record held by the men’s team for the highest Indian total in ODI cricket, which was 418 runs against the West Indies in 2011.

The Indian women’s team’s performance was also highlighted by the significant achievements of individual players.

Pratika Rawal’s 154 runs are the third-highest score by an Indian in women’s ODI cricket, following Deepti Sharma’s 188 against Ireland in 2017 and Harmanpreet Kaur’s 171 against Australia in the same year.

Smriti Mandhana’s rapid century broke Harmanpreet Kaur’s previous record of the fastest century by an Indian woman in ODIs, which stood at 87 balls.

As a team, India’s total of 435 is one of the six instances in women’s cricket where a total of 400 or more runs has been achieved. New Zealand holds the record for the most number of 400-plus scores in women’s ODI cricket, having done so four times.

This victory also marked India as only the third team to surpass the 400-run mark, alongside New Zealand and Australia.

The partnership between Smriti Mandhana and Pratika Rawal will surely be remembered as one of the standout moments of the game.

With their 233-run partnership, they solidified their place in the history of Indian women’s cricket, further cementing India’s reputation as a rising force in the global cricketing arena.
