India Under-19 cricketers celebrate after their victory.

Half-centuries by Harvansh Pangalia and R S Ambrish helped India Under-19 recover from a shaky start to defeat South Africa Under-19 by 25 runs under the DLS method in the opening Youth ODI here on Saturday.

After being reduced to 67 for four inside 15 overs, India posted a competitive 301 all out in 50 overs, with Pangalia top-scoring with 93 off 95 balls and Ambrish contributing a composed 65 from 79 deliveries.

India’s innings began on a fragile note as openers Vaibhav Suryavanshi (11) and Aaron George (5) departed early. The visitors then suffered a double setback when Abhigyan Kundu (21) and Vedant Trivedi (21) were dismissed in successive overs.

Pangalia and Ambrish then steadied the innings before accelerating, adding 137 runs for the fifth wicket. Pangalia struck seven fours and two sixes, while Ambrish found the boundary on seven occasions.

Late cameos from Kanishk Chouhan, who scored 32 off 23 balls, and Khilan Patel, who smashed 26 from just 12 deliveries, pushed India beyond the 300-run mark. South Africa’s 17-year-old left-arm pacer J J Basson was the standout bowler, finishing with figures of four for 54.

In reply, South Africa lost three early wickets and slipped to 62 for three, with Deepesh Devendran claiming two for 33. Jorich van Schalkwyk led the recovery with an unbeaten 60 off 72 balls, supported by Armaan Manack’s 46.

However, play was halted due to lightning and heavy rain when South Africa were 148 for four in 27.4 overs. With conditions worsening, the umpires applied the DLS method, handing India a 25-run victory.
