Indian opener Abhishek Sharma’s participation in Thursday’s T20 World Cup clash against Namibia is in serious jeopardy after he was hospitalised in New Delhi with a stomach infection. According to BCCI sources, Abhishek has been under medical care for the past two days, with doctors running tests to determine the severity of the issue, making a quick recovery for the upcoming match unlikely.
The left-hander had already been subbed out during the opener against the USA last Saturday after failing to score, with Sanju Samson stepping in to field.
While India faces Namibia on Thursday, the team management is clearly prioritizing Abhishek’s recovery for the high-profile encounter against Pakistan on February 15 in Colombo. Given that stomach infections severely impact stamina, his ability to travel, train, and play within the next few days remains uncertain.
Samson has been getting extra work in the nets with batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, suggesting he is the likely replacement if Abhishek doesn't make the flight to Sri Lanka. Notably, Abhishek attended head coach Gautam Gambhir’s team dinner on Sunday but left prematurely, highlighting that he was already feeling unwell.
