Flight ticket prices from India and Pakistan to Sri Lanka have skyrocketed ahead of the highly anticipated India-Pakistan T20 World Cup match scheduled for 15 February.
Round-trip fares from Mumbai to Colombo now stand at approximately ₹60,000, while flights from Karachi to Colombo have surged to 105,000 Pakistani Rupees.
Sri Lankan Airlines reported an overnight jump of around ₹10,000 in fares following Pakistan’s decision to end its boycott.
The price surge follows a reversal by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) after intensive back-channel diplomacy involving the PCB, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), Sri Lanka Cricket, and the International Cricket Council (ICC).
The match carries an estimated economic value of more than $250 million, encompassing broadcast revenue, ticket sales, sponsorships, and advertising income.
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the decision on the official government social media handle, stating that the country would participate in the fixture following “requests from friendly countries”, including Sri Lanka, the UAE, and Bangladesh.
“The Government of Pakistan directs the PCB and the national cricket team to take the field on February 15,” the post read.
The announcement ended weeks of uncertainty surrounding the marquee clash, triggering an unprecedented surge in flight tickets, hotel bookings, and other travel costs across Sri Lanka as fans prepare for what is expected to be a massive turnout on match day.
