Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu's campaign at the Indonesia Open came to an end on Thursday after she suffered a straight-games defeat to world No. 1 An Se Young of South Korea in the women's singles round of 16. Sindhu, who had also fallen to the reigning Olympic champion in the quarterfinals of last week's Singapore Open, was unable to reverse her fortunes against the dominant Korean, going down 17-21, 14-21 in a contest that lasted just over 40 minutes.

The loss marked Sindhu's second consecutive defeat to An within a week and extended her winless record against the South Korean star to 10 matches. Despite several spirited moments during the encounter, the Indian shuttler once again found An's consistency, speed, and defensive abilities too difficult to overcome. The opening game began on an encouraging note for Sindhu, who matched her higher-ranked opponent point for point during the early exchanges. The scores remained level at 10-10 midway through the game as the Indian displayed aggressive intent and produced a number of sharp winners to keep An under pressure.

Sindhu looked increasingly confident as the game progressed and briefly moved ahead at 15-14 with some attacking strokeplay and improved court coverage. However, An quickly shifted gears and demonstrated why she currently sits atop the world rankings. The Korean reeled off a string of crucial points, turning the deficit into a 19-16 advantage.

One of the defining moments of the game came during a gruelling 41-shot rally that tested the endurance and concentration of both players. An eventually emerged victorious in the exchange and followed it up with another point to seal the opening game 21-17. Carrying the momentum into the second game, An started strongly and immediately put Sindhu on the defensive. Using her trademark speed around the court and exceptional retrieval skills, the South Korean raced to a commanding 13-6 lead.

To her credit, Sindhu continued to battle hard and refused to let the match slip away without a fight. She produced a few impressive rallies and managed to reduce the deficit at various stages, drawing applause from the crowd with her determination and attacking intent.

However, An remained firmly in control, maintaining her accuracy and consistency from the baseline while forcing errors from the Indian. As the match entered its closing stages, the world No. 1 showed little sign of slowing down and comfortably wrapped up the second game 21-14 to book her place in the quarterfinals.

While the defeat will be disappointing for Sindhu, there were encouraging signs in patches of her performance, particularly during the first game when she was able to challenge one of the most dominant players on the circuit. Nevertheless, An's superior movement, relentless defence, and ability to raise her level at crucial moments once again proved decisive as Sindhu's Indonesia Open journey came to an end.
