Chennai Super Kings (CSK) endured a humiliating eight-wicket defeat at the hands of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Friday, as the MS Dhoni-led side lost three consecutive matches at their iconic Chepauk ground for the first time in their Indian Premier League (IPL) history.
Once again, CSK's batting faltered as they were comprehensively dismantled by a clinical KKR attack. This defeat marked their fifth consecutive loss of the season.
The match unfolded with CSK’s regular skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad ruled out for the remainder of the IPL due to injury, leaving Dhoni to take charge. However, Dhoni's efforts with the bat were limited, managing only one run from four balls before being dismissed in the 16th over after coming in at number nine.
Invited to bat first, CSK crumbled to a meagre 103 for nine, their lowest total ever at Chepauk. KKR's bowlers put up a clinical display, with Narine (3/13), Harshit Rana, and Varun Chakaravarthy (2 wickets each) leading the charge. CSK's total was the third-lowest in IPL history, and the lowest in this season.
In response, KKR breezed to victory, chasing down the target of 104 in just 10.1 overs. Sunil Narine led the way with a blistering 18-ball 44, featuring two fours and five sixes. Quinton de Kock contributed 23, while Ajinkya Rahane remained unbeaten on 20. Rinku Singh finished the chase with a six off Ravindra Jadeja in the 11th over.
Earlier, Narine’s bowling performance, along with the combined efforts of Rana and Chakaravarthy, restricted CSK to only nine boundaries in the entire innings. Shivam Dube top-scored with an unbeaten 31 from 29 balls, while Vijay Shankar added 29.
CSK’s powerplay woes continued as they managed only 31 runs for the loss of two wickets, the second-lowest by any team this season. Devon Conway (12) and Rachin Ravindra (4) were dismissed early, and Shankar’s luck finally ran out in the 10th over. Despite a brief fight from Dube, CSK's downfall seemed inevitable as wickets continued to fall. Dhoni’s dismissal in the 16th over was the final blow to their hopes.
The Chepauk crowd, once full of hope, fell silent as CSK’s innings ended, and KKR completed their dominant victory with ease.
