The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the suspension of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 for one week, effective immediately. The decision comes in the wake of growing national security concerns.

In a statement released by the BCCI media advisory, the Board explained that further updates regarding the new schedule and venues of the tournament would be announced after a thorough assessment of the situation. The review will take place in consultation with relevant authorities and stakeholders.

The suspension was confirmed by the IPL Governing Council after consulting with key stakeholders, including franchisees, broadcasters, sponsors, and fans. Many franchisees had expressed concerns over the situation, reflecting the sentiments of their players.

“The Board reposes full faith in the strength and preparedness of our armed forces,” the statement read.

“However, at this critical juncture, the BCCI stands firmly with the nation. We express our solidarity with the Government of India, the Armed Forces, and the people of our country. The Board salutes the bravery, courage, and selfless service of our armed forces, whose heroic efforts under Operation Sindoor continue to protect and inspire the nation, as they lead a resolute response to the recent terrorist attack and the unwarranted aggression by Pakistan’s armed forces," it added.

The BCCI emphasised that, while cricket remains a national passion, nothing is greater than the sovereignty, integrity, and security of India. "The BCCI remains firmly committed to support all efforts that safeguard India and will always align its decisions in the best interest of the nation," the statement concluded.

The turning point came after the match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala was abruptly called off due to security concerns.

The hill town venue, located less than 100 kilometres from the highly sensitive Pathankot region, has become a focal point for security alerts, pushing the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to take urgent steps to reassess the situation.

The match in Dharamsala, which had already faced a delayed start due to rain, was cut short when floodlights at the stadium unexpectedly went out. While initially believed to be a technical glitch, the situation escalated when players and officials were informed about air raid alerts in the region.

Spectators, who had filled nearly 80 per cent of the stadium, were swiftly evacuated, with some reportedly chanting anti-Pakistan slogans as they made their way out. Flights to and from Dharamsala have also been suspended, and team buses were redirected to safer locations.
