The rise of fearless youngsters has become one of the defining features of modern IPL cricket with teenage talents stepping onto the biggest stage without a hint of hesitation, says former IPL and Mumbai cricketer Siddesh Lad. From backing their natural game under pressure to learning alongside international stars, India’s next generation of cricketers is redefining confidence and accelerating the evolution of T20 cricket.

In this candid interaction, the veteran Mumbai cricketer and Maratha Royals leader reflects on the changing mindset of young Indian batters, the impact of the IPL’s evolving rules, and why tournaments like the T20 Mumbai League are becoming vital breeding grounds for future stars. He also speaks about Mumbai’s unmatched cricket culture, dressing-room learning and the challenge of defending the title in 2026.

The rise of fearless youngsters in the IPL has transformed the face of Indian cricket, with teenage talents walking into high-pressure situations without hesitation. Speaking about the new generation of cricketers, Mumbai stalwart and MSC Maratha Royals figure highlighted how confidence, exposure and modern-day league structures are shaping players much earlier than before.

He pointed to young players like Vaibhav Suryavanshi as examples of a generation that has grown up understanding pressure through constant exposure to franchise cricket. “What stands out is their clarity and self-belief at such a young age. Earlier, young players would take time to settle because the occasion itself felt overwhelming. Today’s youngsters arrive mentally prepared,” he said.

According to him, the IPL environment has removed fear from young batters while simultaneously increasing the depth in Indian cricket. He also credited the Impact Player rule for encouraging aggressive intent among emerging players. “An unestablished batter earlier would think about survival if the team was in trouble. Now, with an extra batter available, players feel freer to express themselves from ball one,” he explained.

However, he cautioned that fearless cricket should not become reckless cricket. “Mindset and game awareness still separate good players from great ones,” he added.

The veteran also stressed the importance of the T20 Mumbai League in bridging the gap between club cricket and the IPL. He described the tournament as a platform where players experience genuine pressure situations before entering bigger leagues.

“You can practice in the nets for months, but nothing replicates a packed Wankhede Stadium, television cameras and the entire city watching you. The T20 Mumbai League gives youngsters a close understanding of pressure and prepares them mentally,” he said.

Mumbai’s cricketing structure, he believes, remains one of the strongest talent-producing systems in the country because of its competitive culture and constant volume of cricket. “Players are challenged all the time here. That naturally raises standards and makes them match-ready very early,” he noted.

He also highlighted the rapid learning curve modern youngsters enjoy by sharing dressing rooms with international stars in franchise cricket. Young cricketers today get direct access to players like Suryakumar Yadav and Shreyas Iyer, observing their preparation, discipline and tactical awareness firsthand.

“You can’t teach those things in coaching clinics. When youngsters sit alongside these stars, they realise they belong at that level too if they follow the right processes,” he said.

Looking ahead, he believes the T20 Mumbai League can become one of India’s most significant domestic T20 tournaments and an even bigger pipeline for Indian cricket talent.

Speaking about defending champions MSC Maratha Royals, he admitted expectations would be higher this season. “Every team will bring their best against us. But we are ready for the challenge and excited to raise the benchmark once again,” he said.
