Sinner Outlasts Zverev to Claim His Third Grand Slam Victory.

Jannik Sinner created history on January 26, 2025, by successfully defending his Australian Open title and becoming the first Italian to win three Grand Slam titles.

The world No.1 showcased his ruthless form as he defeated second seed Alexander Zverev 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 in a remarkable final at the Rod Laver Arena.

This victory marked a significant milestone for Sinner, as he surpassed the record of Nicola Pietrangeli, who had won two French Open titles in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

The Italian’s win was not just a testament to his physical and mental strength but also a demonstration of his skill on hard courts. Sinner’s victory was achieved after two hours and 42 minutes of intense battle with the German, Zverev, who has been in the shadow of major titles for years.

Despite his best efforts, including smashing 12 aces and 25 winners, Zverev could not overcome the relentless force of Sinner’s play. This marks Sinner’s third consecutive major win on hard courts, following his triumph at Melbourne Park and his first Grand Slam win at the US Open.

As for Zverev, his struggles in Grand Slam finals continued. The 27-year-old was hoping to become the first German since Boris Becker in 1996 to win a major but fell short once again.

Zverev has now lost three consecutive Grand Slam finals, following his defeat at the US Open in 2020 and the French Open in 2024. His 45 unforced errors were a significant factor in his downfall, and despite his attempts to fight back, Sinner’s consistent play and unwavering composure proved too much.

The match saw an impressive display of resilience and dominance by Sinner. The first set was marked by Zverev’s early struggles, particularly on his serve.

He saved break points in the fourth and eighth games, but despite his best efforts, Sinner managed to break through in the eighth game, winning the first set with authority.

The second set was equally competitive, with Zverev managing to hold his serve and force a tie-break. At 4-4 in the tie-break, Zverev applied pressure, but Sinner responded with exceptional focus, winning three points in a row to clinch the second set.

In the final set, Sinner’s break of serve at 3-2 proved crucial. He capitalised on two break opportunities and went on to close the match out comfortably.

Throughout the match, Sinner did not give Zverev any opportunities to break his serve, a testament to his dominant serving and impressive control over the game.

By maintaining his high level of play, Sinner clinched his third Grand Slam title, becoming one of the few players in the Open Era to win their first three Grand Slam singles finals.
