In a recent development, a court in Jhajjar, Haryana, has declined to grant police custody of two-time Olympic medalist wrestler Sushil Kumar to the Haryana Police in connection with a case registered under the Arms Act.
The Haryana Police had approached the court seeking custody of Sushil Kumar, who is currently lodged in a Delhi prison in relation to a separate murder case. The request was linked to an FIR filed at the Sadar Police Station in Jhajjar, Haryana.
Sushil Kumar was brought before the Jhajjar Court on a production warrant for the hearing. Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) Meenu turned down the Haryana Police's application, which had sought five days of police custody.
The police argued that custody was necessary to conduct a thorough interrogation of Sushil Kumar and to effect the arrest of an individual—referred to as "the boy"—through whom he allegedly arranged for a pistol and cartridges to be delivered to one Vishal. Authorities further stated that Sushil Kumar needed to be taken to locations in Delhi and Punjab as part of the investigation.

However, while rejecting the application, the court observed that no grounds for custodial remand had been established, as the police application failed to specify any particular place, city, or district in Delhi or Punjab where the accused was required to be taken.
Consequently, the court remanded Sushil Kumar to judicial custody until December 29 and issued directions for his next appearance to be conducted via video conferencing. Advocate Rohit Dalal represented Sushil Kumar in court and argued that the police's application should be dismissed, contending that there was no connection between the accused and the co-accused. He further submitted that Sushil Kumar had already been interrogated at Tihar Jail in Delhi.
Additionally, on December 16, following his production from Tihar Jail, the Haryana Police interrogated Sushil Kumar for two hours within the premises of the Jhajjar court.
