Maharashtra clinched its inaugural ice-skating gold on Day 3 of the Khelo India Winter Games 2024, held in Leh, Ladakh. Currently, Karnataka leads the medal tally with four gold medals out of the eight awarded thus far.

"The Khelo India Winter Games are currently being held in Ladakh from February 2nd to 6th, with the remaining schedule set to take place in Gulmarg from February 21st to 25th," announced the organizing committee.

India international Varsha Puranik secured double gold in the Short Track race for women above 17 years category, winning the 500m event after her earlier victory in the 300m race.

Puranik completed her race in 1:07:78 seconds, making her the sole athlete to achieve double gold and the standout performer among female athletes in the games.

Telangana showcased its strength, with Nayana Sri Talluri winning the 500m race in the women’s Under-17 category.

She had also triumphed in the 300m event on Saturday, solidifying her status as a rising star in the division.

Telangana made an impressive debut in the Khelo India Winter Games in February 2023, securing five ice skating medals at Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir.

In the ice hockey competition, the men's Group A teams exhibited exceptional skills and teamwork. The UT of Jammu and Kashmir secured a dominant 5-0 victory against Haryana, while the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) dominated Himachal Pradesh with a stunning 4-0 victory.

Maharashtra climbed to the third spot in the medal tally standings with 1 gold, 7 silver, and 5 bronze medals. Araw Patwardhan secured Maharashtra's first gold in the men’s under-17, 500-meter short track event.

While ice skaters have dominated the medal tally so far, the ice hockey competition is heating up with matches held at the NDS Stadium and the Ladakh Scouts Regimental Centre.

Hosts Ladakh, Army, and ITBP teams have garnered massive support from enthusiastic crowds, setting the stage for thrilling semi-finals to be played on Monday.

In the women’s division, ITBP and Ladakh are poised to compete for the gold, while Himachal Pradesh and Telangana aim for the bronze, based on trends and results of the matches in the round-robin league.
