Former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik announced his retirement from all forms of competitive cricket on his 39th birthday.
Karthik’s decision, anticipated since the Royal Challengers Bangalore's exit from the IPL Eliminator, was officially declared on Saturday.
"Having given plenty of thought for some time now, I have decided to move on from playing competitive cricket. I officially announce my retirement and put my playing days behind me as I square up for the new challenges that lie ahead," Karthik shared on 'X'.
Karthik, who has represented India in 180 matches across all three formats, amassed 3463 runs, including one Test century and 17 half-centuries.
His prowess as a wicketkeeper is evidenced by his 172 dismissals, primarily behind the stumps, with a few in the outfield.
Karthik first captured the public’s imagination with his spectacular airborne stumping of Michael Vaughan in England during Sourav Ganguly’s captaincy in 2004.
His international career spanned almost two decades, concluding with his participation in the 2022 T20 World Cup under Rohit Sharma.
Throughout his career, Karthik played under various captains, including Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, and Virat Kohli.
"I'd like to thank all my coaches, captains, selectors, and members of the support staff, who have made this long journey pleasant and enjoyable," Karthik expressed in his statement.
