Kevin Magnussen reflects on key moments in F1 journey.

Kevin Magnussen, the Danish Formula 1 driver, is preparing to retire from the sport at the end of the 2024 season, reflecting on his career, the pivotal decisions he made, and the opportunities that slipped through his fingers.

While his time in Formula 1 might be marked by untapped potential, Magnussen's journey is also one of immense pride and resilience. His path, which began with McLaren in 2014, was filled with near-misses, moments of brilliance, and hard-earned experience.

Magnussen first made a splash in the Formula 1 world during his debut season. The 2014 Australian Grand Prix saw him finish an impressive third, a remarkable result for a rookie.

However, as McLaren's performance began to decline, Magnussen struggled to maintain consistency. By 2015, the team had shifted focus, and Magnussen lost his seat to Fernando Alonso.

Reflecting on his time at McLaren, Magnussen acknowledged the timing of his entry into the team. He admitted that had he joined the team a few years earlier, the story could have been different.

"It took McLaren 10 years to get back to the form they had in 2012," Magnussen told Autosport. "I hit it right at the beginning of that downward trend. If I had come two or three years earlier, it would have been a different story."

Despite his early promise, Magnussen was unable to consistently finish races, a shortcoming he identified as a key factor in his downfall. "I was quicker than Jenson [Button] on pace, but he outscored me in races. I needed to calm down and finish races," he said. Had he done so, he believes his career could have taken a different turn.

After his McLaren departure, Magnussen spent 2015 as a reserve driver before returning to the grid with Renault in 2016. But it was his move to Haas in 2017 that brought a resurgence. The team showed promise, and Magnussen found himself hoping for a brighter future.

By 2018, Haas had a competitive car, and Magnussen was optimistic about the direction his career was heading. “It was my third year in F1. I was 24 or something…23? You know, anything was still possible,” he shared.

There were moments when he truly believed success was within his reach, especially during the strong first half of 2018. Magnussen recalls how Ferrari began showing interest in his performances.

"In 2018, we had a really good car in the first half of the year. Charles [Leclerc] had just arrived in F1 with Sauber. And the start of his first season wasn’t great. And mine was really good!" He was even invited to drive in Ferrari's simulator, which he initially believed could be the beginning of a significant career opportunity.

However, as Leclerc’s performance skyrocketed, the interest from Ferrari faded. Magnussen was left to wonder what might have been.

His career was further shaped by a key decision in 2018. With Daniel Ricciardo leaving Red Bull, Magnussen's management had discussions with Red Bull boss Christian Horner, who suggested a seat at Toro Rosso (now AlphaTauri).

However, Magnussen turned it down, a decision he now questions. "Christian said, ‘There’s nothing at Red Bull, but we can talk about Toro Rosso.’ I said, ‘No, no, let’s not do that,’ which I probably should have done. The guy who got that Toro Rosso seat ended up at Red Bull."
