No modifications needed to KIWG schedule as incident took place away from designated competition area.

An avalanche near the Gulmarg ski resort on Thursday afternoon caused the tragic death of a Russian skier, but all athletes participating in the ongoing Khelo India Winter Games (KIWG) remain unharmed, officials confirmed.

The incident occurred "away from the designated competition area" and has not necessitated any modifications to the KIWG schedule. The games commenced on February 22nd and are scheduled to conclude on February 25th.

"The Khelo India Winter Games 2024, currently underway at Kangdoori Phase 1, were not impacted by the avalanche that struck Gulmarg earlier today," stated a Khelo India official, emphasising the prioritization of athlete and staff safety.

"The avalanche occurred beyond the ridge in Phase 2, posing no threat to the competition venues. We have implemented all necessary safety measures," he added.

This assurance echoes previous statements from Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council secretary Nuzhat Gull, who confirmed the well-being of all KIWG athletes following the incident.

The KIWG boasts the participation of over 700 athletes, 150 support staff, 115 technical officials, and 250 volunteers. The games will award a total of 136 medals across various winter sports disciplines.
