The second edition of the Climate Cup, pitched as one of the lowest carbon footprint football tournaments in the world, is set to begin in Ladakh next month, officials said.
Organised by the Ladakh Football Association in association with the Union Territory's administration and the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, the tournament is intended to create awareness about climate change.
The matches will be played on grounds situated at a height of 11,000 feet above sea level.
According to the General Secretary of the Ladakh Football Association, Tsering Angmo, the tournament was going to serve as a flagship game for the region with focus on the issue of climate change.
He told reporters, "At 11,000 feet above sea level, six teams will gather for a week in September to compete in Ladakh's Climate Cup.”
The Climate Cup is in a different league altogether from other championship is that it promotes sustainability: no plastic is used, and even the buses for team transportation are EVs.
Players are also given refreshments made from local fruits, thereby furthering the green ecosystem of the region.
Organisers of the tournament have also teamed up with the Forest Department, which has promised to plant ten trees for each goal scored in this tournament.
The traditional Ladakhi motifs and symbols on the wooden tournament trophy will reinforce the ecological angle of the competition.
The Climate Cup was initially organised to highlight the impact of climate change on the fragile ecosystem of Ladakh.
With rising temperatures and unpredictable weather across the region, this fragile ecology and way of life is under considerable threat.
Apart from the football matches, there will be a one-day conference called 'Climate 11' on 6th September, a day before the final.
This conference is going to link sports, sustainability, and climate change, further giving an environmental theme to this event.
