Manchester United has confirmed that defender Lisandro Martínez has suffered a cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during the club's 2-0 loss to Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The Argentine international was forced off the pitch on a stretcher in the 76th minute after attempting to challenge Palace forward Ismaila Sarr.
In an official statement released on Thursday, United revealed the full extent of Martínez's injury, which will rule him out for the remainder of the season. There are concerns that the recovery could take more than six months.
The statement also mentioned that the injury assessment is ongoing to determine the best course of treatment and rehabilitation timeline. "Everyone at Manchester United wishes Lisandro Martínez strength for a successful recovery, and we will be supporting him every step of the way," the club added.
This injury marks a significant blow to Martínez, who has faced persistent injury troubles over the past two seasons. Last year, a knee ligament injury sidelined him for an extended period, hindering his progress after an impressive debut season at Old Trafford.
His absence will undoubtedly affect the team, as manager Erik ten Hag continues to grapple with defensive injury woes throughout the campaign.
Without Martínez, Manchester United will now rely on Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire, and Victor Lindelof to fill the void in central defence. This setback adds to the club's ongoing challenges, with United currently sitting in 13th place in the Premier League standings.
The defeat to Crystal Palace was their seventh loss in 13 home games this season, underlining the difficulties facing the team at this point in the campaign.
