Liverpool have been crowned Premier League champions for the second time, and for a record-equalling 20th time in England’s top flight, after a 5-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
With this win, Liverpool extended their lead at the top of the Premier League, moving out of reach of their nearest rivals, Arsenal, with four matches still to play.
The triumph means the Reds join an elite list of teams to have secured the title so early, with Slot’s men finishing the day with 82 points from 34 matches. The feat comes in the debut season of head coach Arne Slot, who has led the club to the title in style.
Liverpool’s previous Premier League title came in the 2019/20 season under Jurgen Klopp, during which no fans were allowed in stadiums due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, this victory holds special significance, as it will be the first time the team lifts the Premier League trophy in front of their fans.
The roads surrounding Anfield were flooded with jubilant supporters ahead of the match, offering a hero’s welcome for the team. Slot acknowledged the impact of the fans, saying, "The way we arrived on the bus, everyone was thinking there is no way we were going to lose this game. Conceding first made it difficult, but they always find a way to win."
Mohamed Salah, who scored to make it 4-1, was visibly emotional after the win. Speaking to Sky Sports, he reflected on the achievement: "It is incredible to win this with our fans. This is 100 per cent better than last time, especially with the fans. We have a different group now so to show we can do it again is something special."
The victory means Liverpool have now matched Manchester United’s tally of 20 top-flight titles. The Reds’ 18 league titles before the Premier League era, combined with their two Premier League wins, bring them level with their fierce rivals.
Salah has been a key figure in Liverpool’s campaign, topping both the goals and assists charts with 28 goals and 18 assists in the 2024/25 season. His contributions account for 58 per cent of the team’s Premier League tally this season. Salah, who recently signed a new contract, is eyeing a potential record-breaking feat, saying: "Goal involvements, for sure... hopefully I’m going to break it soon. I know I broke the record for 38 games. Now one goal or one assist to go I think? I counted!"
With a solid lead in the Premier League, Liverpool now look to finish the season strong, while Salah continues his quest for personal records.
