Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has extended his best wishes to boxer Lovlina Borgohain, the sole representative from the state for the Paris Olympics, according to a release on Friday.
Lovlina, who clinched a bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Games, made history as the first athlete from the Northeastern state to achieve an Olympic medal.
In a heartwarming gesture, Sarma signed a 'good luck' gamosa for Lovlina.
The Assam Amateur Boxing Association (AABA) initiated this effort, gathering well-wishes from various players and notable personalities for the athlete.
Hemanta Kumar Kalita, the AABA secretary and secretary general of the Boxing Federation of India, will present the 'good luck gamosa' to Lovlina.
The Chief Minister also engaged with Lovlina via a video call while she was training in Germany.
This marks a significant morale boost for the boxer as she prepares for the upcoming games.
Lovlina is only the second boxer from Assam to compete in the Olympics, following Shiva Thapa, who represented India in the 2012 London Olympics and the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Lovlina's bronze medal in her debut at Tokyo 2020 brought immense pride to Assam.
If she secures another medal in Paris, she will become the first Indian boxer to win consecutive Olympic medals and join an elite group of Indian athletes, including wrestler Sushil Kumar and shuttler PV Sindhu, who have achieved back-to-back Olympic medals in the post-Independence era.
