Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir, who confidently predicted that India would not qualify for the T20 World Cup 2026 semi-finals, faced heavy trolling on social media after India's dominant victory over the West Indies in their do-or-die Super 8 clash on Sunday (March 1).
Amir, who had some earlier predictions spot-on during the tournament, had stated ahead of the India-West Indies match that Team India would be knocked out.
Speaking on a show hosted by Tabish Hashmi, he remarked, “India is not playing good cricket. Check their fielding; they dropped 3-4 catches. Except for Bumrah, every bowler is getting smashed. I still believe India will not win this T20 World Cup.”
He doubled down, saying India would definitely miss the last four, with South Africa and the West Indies advancing instead.
However, India proved him wrong in style, chasing down 196 to win by five wickets with four balls to spare at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, in front of a packed 65,000-strong crowd. Sanju Samson delivered a masterclass, remaining unbeaten on 97 off just 50 balls (12 fours, 4 sixes), turning the game decisively after early wickets to openers Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan.
Tilak Varma chipped in with a handy 27 as India reached 199/5 in 19.2 overs— their highest successful chase in T20 World Cup history.
While Amir has often praised Team India in the past and counts Virat Kohli among his favourite modern greats, social media erupted with memes, sarcastic comments, and jokes at his expense.
Former Indian pacer Irfan Pathan joined in, posting, "Jab jab Mohammad Amir ne apna limit cross kiya hai tb tb usko bhari pada.” (@IrfanPathan) Cricket fans and experts flooded platforms with reactions, mocking the prediction that backfired spectacularly after India's resilient performance sealed their semi-final spot.
India now advances to face England in the semi-finals at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, on March 5.
