Maharashtra surpasses Karnataka, tops medal tally in Khelo India Winter Games

Maharashtra emerged as the top medal-winning state, edging out Karnataka to secure the coveted position in the Khelo India Winter Games, 2024. Claiming a total of 20 medals, including six golds, Maharashtra showcased exceptional performance across various sports disciplines in the 4th edition of the games. 

 

Despite an equal number of gold medals, Karnataka's overall medal count of eight placed them in the second spot.

 

Hosts Ladakh, renowned for their remarkable achievements in speed skating, clinched third place with an impressive tally of 13 medals.

 

The second segment of the KIWG is slated to take place in Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir, scheduled from February 21 to 25, featuring four sports disciplines.

 

The ice-hockey finals witnessed a thrilling showdown, drawing over 3,000 spectators who braved icy conditions to witness the action. In a closely contested men's final, Army emerged victorious, securing a 3-1 victory after a gripping shootout against ITBP. Meanwhile, the ITBP women's team clinched the gold medal by defeating Ladakh 4-0.

 

Reflecting on the intense competition, Army captain Stanzin Phandey expressed satisfaction with their hard-fought victory, acknowledging the tough challenge posed by ITBP. Similarly, ITBP women's team captain Tashi Dolker hailed their triumph as a historic moment.

 

In the ice-skating events, Maharashtra's Shruti Kotwal, a seasoned competitor who trains in the US, dominated the competition by clinching gold medals in both the long-track events (500m and 1000m) in the above-17 years category. Shruti's stellar performance showcased her exceptional skills, reaffirming her status as a top-tier athlete.

 

Additionally, Ladakh skaters Padma Angmo, Insha Fatima, and Tasnia Shamim displayed exemplary prowess by securing a clean sweep of medals in the under-17 1000m race, further enhancing Ladakh's standing in the competition.

 

Maharashtra's resurgence in the long-track skating events, capturing three gold medals, propelled them past Karnataka in the cumulative medal count, ultimately securing the top position in the medal tally.

 

The KIWP witnessed fierce competition and remarkable sporting achievements, highlighting the talent and dedication of athletes from across the country. 

 

With the upcoming segment in Gulmarg, the excitement is set to continue as athletes strive to showcase their prowess and vie for top honours in the prestigious sporting event.
