After a two-year hiatus, the Durand Cup, Asia’s oldest and one of football’s most storied tournaments returned to Imphal with a ceremonial trophy tour that swept across Manipur, celebrating both the sport’s rich legacy and the region’s enduring love for the beautiful game.

The silverware, comprising the original Durand Cup, the historic Shimla Trophy, and the President’s Cup, was unveiled at the City Convention Centre. The occasion was graced by the Governor of Manipur, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, as chief guest, alongside Chief Secretary Prashant Kumar Singh, senior officials of the Indian Army, and top police leadership.

The return of the prestigious 134th edition to Manipur was marked by a roadshow that began from Sendra and made its way through Moirang, Bishnupur, Manipur University, Kangla Gate, and several other locations before culminating at the venue. It was flagged off with the presence of eight members of the Indian Women’s National Football Team from Manipur, including captain Ngangbam Sweety Devi and star players like Elangbam Panthoi Chanu and Grace Dangmei, fresh off their qualification for the 2026 AFC Women’s Asia Cup.

“The hosting of the 134th edition of the Durand Cup in Imphal is a testament to our state’s deep-rooted passion for football and the collective efforts of both civil and military establishments,” said the Governor. “Manipur has always been at the forefront of sporting excellence, producing national heroes and Olympians. I wish the 134th Edition of the Durand Cup great success. I am confident that it will be bigger, better, and more thrilling than ever before.”

In recent years… the tournament retains its heritage while embracing modern professionalism.”

Describing the event as “historic and meaningful,” Lt Gen Abhijit S Pendharkar said, “The Durand Cup is not only a celebration of sporting excellence but also a living tribute to the enduring bond between the military and the people of India.”

Six matches will be played in Imphal during this year’s edition. The opening fixture on 30 July will see home sides NEROCA FC and TRAU FC clash in the highly anticipated Manipur derby at Khuman Lampak Stadium. They will be joined in the group by Real Kashmir FC and the Indian Navy Football Team.
