Meghalaya's 76-year-old marathon enthusiast, Kmoin Wahlang, has been selected to represent India at the prestigious 13th Pan Pacific Masters Games 2024 in Gold Coast, Australia. 

 

Her participation has garnered full support from the Meghalaya government, which has pledged to cover all expenses related to her journey and participation in the event.

 

Wahlang, known for her resilient spirit and athletic prowess, expressed her determination to bring home a gold medal from the upcoming competition. 

 

“I will strive to bring back a gold medal if I get there,” she had said.

 

Her journey to the international stage began after her impressive performance at a national event in Hyderabad earlier this year, catching the attention of the Pan India Masters Games Federation.

 

Accompanied by Meghalaya Sports Minister Shakliar Warjri, Wahlang recently met with Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to discuss her preparations and upcoming challenges in Australia.

 

Taking to social media, state Sports Minister Warjri wrote, "I'm pleased to announce that we assured her the government would extend support for her upcoming race. We hope she brings medals for our state and country."

 

Departing for Australia on October 29, Wahlang's participation in the Pan Pacific Masters Games would include events such as the 800m, 1500m, and 3000m races. 

 

Her itinerary for the event, featuring multiple events in the 75-plus age category, will be finalised after the closure of entries on October 18, 2024.

 

Her selection for the Indian athletics team is dedicated to her commitment and past achievements in marathons across India, including Mumbai, Kolkata, Guwahati, and her home state of Meghalaya.

 

Wahlang's athletic journey began as a response to health challenges following the birth of her 12th child. 

 

Starting with walking due to a lack of running shoes, she soon embraced running and has since completed marathons nationwide. 

 

Supported by the RUNMeghalaya Association (RMA), Wahlang has participated in prestigious events like the Pinkathon and Tata Mumbai Marathon, setting records as the oldest female participant in the 42K run.

 

Her achievements resonate deeply within the Khasi community of Meghalaya's Mawkyrwat region, known for their historical prowess in long-distance running akin to Mexico's Tarahumara tribe.
