Guillermo Ochoa, the Mexican goalkeeper who played a stellar role in his country’s national team, has retired from professional soccer with a deeply moving statement of appreciation for his family, teammates, and fans. In a post on X, the veteran goalkeeper has declared that he is retiring from professional football at age 39 after an illustrious 22-year long career playing for his country’s team. Noting that he had never thought his dreams would take him so far in his life, Ochoa said that he takes pride in his achievements and finds satisfaction in giving his best for his country. He thanked millions of fans for their unconditional love and support throughout his career.

 

Ochoa was selected to play for six FIFA World Cups, an impressive feat achieved only by legends like Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. He served as his country’s first-choice goalkeeper at the 2014 tournament in Brazil, the 2018 edition in Russia, and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. His professional career began with Club América, where he made his senior debut in February 2004. Following his seven years in Liga MX, Ochoa joined French club Ajaccio in 2011 and became the first Mexican goalkeeper ever to represent a European team.

 

Some of his notable performances at an international level include a remarkable display in a match against host nation Brazil in the group stage of the 2014 World Cup where Ochoa saved six shots to help Mexico secure a remarkable draw. In the 2022 edition of the World Cup, Ochoa saved a penalty kick from Poland’s Robert Lewandowski and became the first Mexican goalkeeper to save a penalty in a World Cup tournament. Apart from playing on the international level, Ochoa was also very successful in regional competitions where he won six CONCACAF Gold Cups and one CONCACAF Nations League title in the 2024-25 season.

 

As one who had been raised in the youth academy of Club América, Ochoa eventually found himself back at his childhood club after spending time in French, Spanish, and Belgian clubs. Fans flocked to the airport to welcome him back to the Mexican domestic leagues. Despite his stint on the bench during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, he played one emotional game for Mexico in their final group stage match by coming in as a substitute player.
