A struggling Mumbai Indians will look to halt a worrying slide when it faces a resurgent Gujarat Titans in an Indian Premier League clash here on Monday.

The two sides come into the fixture on sharply contrasting trajectories. Gujarat, after back-to-back defeats at the start of the season, has regained momentum with three successive wins to climb to sixth on the table. Mumbai, by contrast, has lost four matches on the trot after an opening victory, slipping to ninth with a series of heavy defeats.

For the five-time champions, little has gone right this season. Their campaign has been hampered by underwhelming powerplay returns, an inconsistent middle order and a bowling attack that has struggled to make inroads.

Much of the burden has fallen on Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma, who anchor the middle order. While Suryakumar has produced occasional flashes, including a half-century, consistency has eluded him. Tilak has endured a particularly lean run, scoring just 43 runs in five innings.

Captain Hardik Pandya has also struggled to impose himself, managing only 81 runs from four matches, compounding Mumbai’s batting concerns.

The issues extend beyond batting. Mumbai’s inability to dominate the powerplay has repeatedly left it chasing games. The wicketless run of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah remains a major concern. Though economical, Bumrah has been unable to break partnerships, with batters opting to see him off.

Support from the rest of the attack has been limited. Shardul Thakur and Deepak Chahar have struggled for breakthroughs, while the spin unit has lacked consistency, proving costly on batting-friendly surfaces.

Mumbai is also awaiting clarity on the fitness of Rohit Sharma, who missed the previous game with a hamstring injury.

Gujarat, meanwhile, has found ways to win despite its own concerns. Its batting remains heavily reliant on the top order: Skipper Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler, while the middle order is yet to fully click.

With the ball, Gujarat has shown promise without sustained consistency. Mohammed Siraj and Kagiso Rabada have been expensive at times, while Rashid Khan has had an inconsistent run.

However, a strong showing in the previous match has bolstered confidence as the Titans look to extend their winning streak.
