In an effort to address the national team's recurring batting struggles, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed former South African first-class cricketer Mike Smith as the batting coach of the Pakistan men's team. Smith is expected to begin his role with the squad's upcoming tour of England, where Pakistan will be looking to improve its batting consistency ahead of a busy international schedule.

The appointment comes after a series of disappointing batting performances that have raised concerns within Pakistan's cricket setup. The team has frequently suffered dramatic batting collapses across formats in recent months, often failing to capitalize on promising starts or build substantial partnerships. These shortcomings have prompted the PCB to strengthen its coaching staff with a specialist focused solely on improving the batting unit.

Smith, a highly regarded Level-4 certified batting coach, brings with him extensive coaching experience gained in both domestic and franchise cricket. Although he represented South Africa in first-class cricket during his playing days, he has earned greater recognition for his work as a batting mentor, particularly in the fast-paced T20 format.

Over the years, Smith has worked with several franchises in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), where he developed a reputation for helping players refine their techniques, improve shot selection, and adapt to different match situations. His familiarity with Pakistan's domestic cricket environment and many of the country's leading players is believed to have played an important role in his selection.

According to a reliable source within the PCB, Smith was chosen after an extensive recruitment process. The cricket board had invited applications for the batting coach's position through a public advertisement, attracting interest from several qualified candidates from around the cricketing world. After evaluating the applications and conducting the selection process, Smith emerged as the preferred candidate.

The source added that the board reached a verbal agreement with Smith after he was shortlisted, with the remaining formalities expected to be completed before Pakistan's departure for England. The PCB is expected to make an official announcement once all contractual procedures have been finalised.

Pakistan's batting has remained under scrutiny despite possessing several talented players. Inconsistent performances, poor shot selection under pressure, and an inability to convert strong starts into match-winning totals have often undermined the team's efforts in major international competitions. Cricket analysts have repeatedly highlighted the need for improved technical preparation, mental resilience, and better decision-making during crucial phases of an innings.

The PCB hopes Smith's appointment will help address these issues by introducing structured batting plans, individualized training programmes, and modern analytical methods. His experience working with T20 franchises is also expected to benefit Pakistan's players as they prepare for an increasingly demanding international calendar that includes bilateral series and global tournaments across all three formats.

The upcoming tour of England is viewed as an important opportunity for the new batting coach to begin implementing his methods. English conditions, known for assisting seam and swing bowling, have historically presented significant challenges for visiting batters. Smith will be tasked with helping Pakistan's players adapt their techniques and build the confidence required to succeed in testing conditions.

His appointment also reflects the PCB's broader strategy of strengthening the national team's support staff by bringing in specialists with international coaching experience. The board has increasingly emphasized the importance of high-performance coaching, data-driven preparation, and player development as Pakistan aims to compete consistently against the world's leading cricket nations.

With expectations high ahead of the England tour, all eyes will be on Mike Smith as he begins the challenge of revitalizing Pakistan's batting unit. The PCB will hope that his expertise and experience can help transform a talented but inconsistent batting lineup into one capable of delivering reliable performances on the international stage and ending the batting collapses that have repeatedly cost the team crucial matches.
